  • A Roanoke senior couple lost $75,000 when scammers used a pop-up to trick them into withdrawing cash from their bank account—local agencies will hold fraud-prevention seminars in September to warn seniors.  Roanoke.com
  • A person died after a medical emergency occurred during the booking process at a Roanoke detention center on August 27th; staff provided CPR until Fire/EMS arrived, and the individual was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where a doctor pronounced the death while Virginia State Police launched an investigation.  WFIR News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke County Public Schools is holding four community meetings at 6 p.m.—three on cellphone dangers at William Byrd, Northside and Cave Spring High Schools and one on suicide prevention at Northside—to address student mental health issues following the suicide of 10-year-old Autumn Bushman. Parents will learn to recognize warning signs and strategies to protect their children in today’s digital world.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke County Public Schools will host four community meetings this fall on digital safety and student mental health—three meetings will address cellphone use dangers on September 17 at William Byrd, October 13 at Northside, and November 18 at Cave Spring—while a separate meeting on September 22 at Northside will cover suicide prevention.  The Roanoke Star
