COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Roanoke is expecting thousands for the Freedom First St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Shamrock Festival on Saturday—marking an unofficial start to spring as local businesses hope to recover from a slow winter.  WFIR News

CRIME NEWS

  • A Roanoke woman, Jaimeka Michelle Austin, 31, pleaded guilty in court to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering for using false information to get COVID relief loans — she agreed to repay nearly $190,000 and now faces a long prison term.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hidden Valley High School teacher Matt Neale was named Virginia Teacher of the Year for Region 6 today. The sophomore teacher and girls’ soccer coach—who once worked in the legal field—said his long career in education and work with hundreds of students helped him earn the award.  WSLS 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Blue Ridge Parkway remains closed because recent winter storms knocked down many tall trees and left road debris, and crews are still cleaning up the damage — no reopening date has been set.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke County and VDOT held an open house at Oak Grove Elementary to share plans to improve safety along Electric Road. The project will use $10 million in state funds to add sidewalks, pedestrian signals, and restricted crossing U-turns, with work starting in 2027—mostly at night to keep traffic moving.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Farm Bureau launched the SAFER initiative to help reduce accidents when drivers share roads with large farm equipment - community groups can join a contest to design displays or media campaigns, and winners will receive cash prizes before Oct. 31.  The Roanoke Star

  • Urban Baby Beginnings opened its 5th Maternal/Perinatal Health Hub this morning on Franklin Road Southwest—delegate Sam Rasoul said the hub will serve underserved communities as Governor Youngkin backs a pending 2.5 million dollar budget item set for review on March 24.  WFIR News
