COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army in Covington has raised only $25,000 toward its $55,000 Red Kettle goal, putting vital local programs at risk. Officials say donations by Christmas Eve may help keep services like shelter and meals running.  WDBJ7
  • On Saturday night, 3rd Street Coffeehouse hosted a benefit concert where local musicians performed to support Feeding Southwest Virginia and raffle tickets were sold for prizes (event held at 305 Mountain Avenue SW downtown).  WSLS 10
  • Angels of Assisi hosted its 7th annual mega adoption event at Berglund Center, bringing together 11 adoption centers to help animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and ponies) find new homes before the holidays.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, Dec. 20, the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office accepted a $10,000 donation from Bluestone Coal — Justice at 340 Campbell Ave to expand holiday outreach for homeless families.  WDBJ7

  • AAA forecasts that over 3.4 million Virginians will travel 50 or more miles from Dec. 20 to Jan. 1, and Roanoke drivers should plan for heavier midday traffic while expecting lighter roads on Christmas and New Year's Day.  WSLS 10
