COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke residents can still sign up for the Drumstick Dash 5K on Thanksgiving morning—a long-standing run that will fund the Rescue Mission shelter and its programs. Lee Clark, the organization’s CEO, discussed the dash and local homelessness during a live studio interview.  WFIR News

  • A night vision tech company announced it will expand operations in Roanoke County to build a new facility—officials said the move will create new jobs and boost local business.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke mechanic Klint Claiborne urges drivers to check their cars (including tires, brakes, oil and coolant) before winter storms to avoid costly repairs.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke is accepting nominations for its 2025 Citizen of the Year award until Nov 21—nominees must be residents who have volunteered for at least three years and performed duties beyond their regular job expectations. Applications require signing a waiver to publish volunteer details and disqualify previous winners, current elected officials, and candidates running for office.  WSLS 10
  • Campbell County is planning a waste transfer station to gather and move trash because the current landfill in Rustburg will fill by 2029—officials expect to pick a site and secure a private partner within the next year. The county is also proposing to take over the landfill property and its future responsibilities to manage waste properly.  WDBJ7
  • Governor Youngkin announced on November 7 that Virginia submitted its application for $1 billion federal Rural Health Transformation funding under H.R. 1 to launch the VA Rural Vitality plan that will modernize rural healthcare by empowering healthier lives, expanding the workforce, reimagining care delivery, and investing in innovation. Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will award the funds by December 31.  WSLS 10
  • Virginia kids and teens are invited to join a contest sponsored by YOVASO, the Virginia State Police, State Farm and the DMV to create a 30-second jingle that promotes seat belt use and responsible driving during the busy holiday season. Entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. December 12 and finalists will be selected for public voting from December 16 to 18—winners will receive cash prizes.  WDBJ7

  • A report from November 13 showed that rising healthcare costs have strained residents in Roanoke Valley, forcing families to tighten their budgets. The report indicates that these expenses will continue to affect local access to care & add financial challenges in the coming months.  WDBJ7
