COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Roanoke Women’s Foundation (223 members) held its 21st Annual Grant Awards Luncheon, awarding over $400,000 in grants to six nonprofits supporting education, the environment and arts and culture in Roanoke. The organization has given more than $6 million over 21 years, and applications for next year's program will open (March 1) and close March 31.  WDBJ7
  • 10 News has compiled a live list of resources for veterans in Southwest and Central Virginia to help with housing, health care and employment. Agencies such as RoanokeTap, Roanoke Vet Center and Lynchburg Area Veterans Council are included—offering support to veterans and their families.  WSLS 10
  • Several restaurants in Southwest and Central Virginia will offer free meals and military discounts to veterans on Veterans Day and surrounding days—offers require a valid military ID.  WSLS 10
  • The Town of Vinton hosted its second annual Field of Honor on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the High Ground Monument on the War Memorial property—where 300 US flags represented honors for veterans and active service members. Community members and organizations could dedicate or purchase a flag for $25, with proceeds aiding Disabled American Veterans.  WSLS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • With less daylight and deer mating season at its peak, Roanoke drivers are urged to slow down during dawn and dusk to avoid collisions. VDOT and AAA recommend lowering speed and using high beams—when safe—to spot deer early and prevent costly repairs.  WFXR-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Groups joined together in a celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Appalachian Trail—honoring a century of its impact on local outdoor life. The event took place yesterday and featured speeches and displays marking the milestone.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia’s first adult high school, The Excel Center, opened earlier this year at Melrose Plaza in Roanoke to help over 60 students earn high school diplomas. Teachers and students say the program offers a full curriculum with subjects like science and English along with free childcare and transportation assistance—students plan to earn certificates and pursue new careers.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The FAA announced that starting today, airlines in 40 high-volume markets will cut flights by 10% due to the government shutdown, and while Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport is not directly reduced, its connections with hubs like Charlotte and LaGuardia may face delays — officials advise travelers to monitor flight statuses—.  WSLS 10
  • Cave Spring VFD became the first in Roanoke County to use battery-powered rescue tools—officials say the new equipment is expected to improve emergency responses.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke County offices — including the administrative center, Parks, Recreation & Tourism office and Circuit Court — will be closed Tuesday, November 11 for Veterans Day while trash collection, public libraries and CORTRAN services follow revised schedules.
