- ➤ Tickets for Illuminights Winter Walk of Lights are now on sale, offering visitors a half-mile wooded trail lit with over 650,000 lights, themed displays, an artisan market, campfire roasting, and select visits from Santa—proceeds support Center in the Square and Explore Park. Roanoke County

- ➤ Governor Glenn Youngkin signed Executive Order 55 to bring back the Presidential Fitness Test in Virginia public schools—this order directs the education department to work with local schools and form a task force to plan the test's return once new federal guidelines are issued. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tuesday marked the 40th anniversary of the flood that raised the Roanoke River by 19 feet in 12 hours on Election Day 1985, causing 13 deaths and prompting many rescues and evacuations. City officials later built flood mitigation projects—such as benchcuts and improved storm drains—to lessen future risks. WVTF

- ➤ Yesterday, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced the Virginia Cares Initiative, a state-wide food drive to help Virginians affected by the federal government shutdown. The drive will serve federal employees, military supporters, and nearly 12,000 newly eligible SNAP families by partnering with seven regional food banks—providing food assistance and additional funds to meet growing needs. - ➤ Botetourt County moved its 1904 Confederate monument Tuesday — the old courthouse was torn down for a new government center — to a monument park in Fincastle. The marker is one of the few that also references Reconstruction when voting rights were given to formerly enslaved men. Cardinal News
