- ➤ Two surviving D-Day veterans now live as neighbors at Brookdale Senior Living in Central Virginia (one is 99 and piloted a troop transport on D-Day while the other is 102 and rescued downed pilots during the invasion). - ➤ Northside Middle School teacher Lauren Burgess was named the October Education Impact Award recipient and received $250 from Blue Eagle Credit Union and WSLS-TV. She will join award honoree Amanda Waldron at the AMLE25 conference in Indianapolis next week to present her innovative teaching methods—highlighting creative projects that engage her students. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Forty years after the Flood of '85, Roanoke continues to work on flood reduction projects that include levees, bench cuts, and property acquisitions to protect homes and businesses. - ➤ Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home and Crematory announced Monday that it will offer Roanoke City residents free rides to the polls today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—the funeral home asks riders to call 24 hours ahead to schedule a ride if needed. WSLS 10
- ➤ Federal cuts this spring reduced millions of pounds of food deliveries to regional food banks—including 38,000 pounds of chicken legs to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank which serves over 170,000 people—while last Saturday's SNAP disruption left more than 800,000 Virginians without benefits, prompting Gov. Youngkin to announce that temporary, week-to-week emergency nutrition assistance began on Monday using state budget surplus. This funding aims to offset the shortages caused by the USDA cuts and the government shutdown. WVTF
- ➤ After Daylight Savings ended, officials warned that darker roads and active deer mating season make driving at night more dangerous.
