COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke residents gathered to say goodbye to Terry Baucom, the beloved owner of B&D Comics, at her funeral where they remembered her warm and generous spirit. Her wife, Daina Fain, said the store will remain open to honor Baucom's legacy & passion for comic books.  WSLS 10
  • Steward’s Mate First Class William Arthur Brown (USNR) is now officially listed as killed in service after new research by Kenyon Goggins (his great-great-nephew) disproved decades-old claims that he was thrown overboard during WWII. Brown died on December 4th while on active duty at Pearl Harbor and is interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.  WSLS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A garage fire (which began around 1:10 p.m. Sunday afternoon) on the 100 block of Barron Drive in Botetourt County displaced two people and their dogs (prompting American Red Cross assistance) as firefighters controlled the blaze within 30 minutes and conducted an additional two hours of overhaul.  WSLS 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Appalachian Power has proposed lowering electricity rates by more than 20% to save households about $10 a month—driven by lower fuel costs and increased solar and battery storage—and to help keep power costs manageable for local residents.  Cardinal News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Roanoke City Council will review appropriation requests from the School Board for federal-funded programs such as school mental health, adult basic education, special education, career and technical learning and teacher quality support— the council session is at 2 p.m. following an informal session at 9 a.m. with grants ranging from about $150,000 to nearly $4 million.  Cardinal News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by Virginia Commonwealth University shows that alpha-gal syndrome—an illness that causes a severe red meat allergy—has increased 100-fold in the US since 2013. Health officials warn that lone star ticks, which can be found in Virginia, are spreading the disease.  WFXR-TV
  • Immunologist Teresa Lambe, known for co-developing the COVID vaccine, will deliver the Maury Strauss Distinguished Public Lecture in Roanoke on Nov. 6. The free event begins with a 5 p.m. reception and a 5:30 p.m. lecture at Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at 2 Riverside Circle + it will be livestreamed.  The Roanoke Star
