COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism will host Spooktacular Saturday at Explore Park — the event will include holiday fun and the last chance to experience Tree Top Quest before it closes for the year.  WFIR News
  • Here @ Home hosted Halloween Trivia on Oct. 22—drawing local residents together to answer spooky questions and celebrate the season. The event provided a fun challenge as participants tested their knowledge before Halloween.  WDBJ7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to a garage fire at the 2300 block of Highland Road in Mt. Pleasant at 4:19 p.m. on Wednesday and had the flames under control in about 10 minutes—no one was injured and the residents stayed in their home as the Fire Marshal's Office investigates.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Roanoke Regional Airport Commission launched a Care Cupboard on the terminal's first floor to thank federal employees serving during the government shutdown. It stocks non-perishable food, toiletries, & household items for free and accepts donations at the Terminal Manager’s Office near Baggage Claim 2 during Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. & near Door 4 from Monday to Friday 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  WFIR News
  • Advocates say the Department of Agriculture must use its backup funds to keep SNAP benefits for almost half a million Virginia families as the government shutdown enters its fourth week. They warn that if the shutdown continues, November benefits may drop—raising the risk of hunger for seniors and children.  WVTF
  • On Wednesday, the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission announced it is launching a Care Cupboard for ROA federal employees working during the government shutdown—public donations of non-perishable food, household items and toiletries are welcome during weekday hours.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia Tech biomedical engineer Jennifer Munson said that slow fluid movement in the brain helps clear waste and deliver nutrients and that changes in this flow can worsen cancer spread and brain fog. She will present her findings in a free lecture — 'How Fluid Flow Shapes the Brain: Cancer and Cognitive Function' — at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, with a reception starting at 5 p.m.  The Roanoke Star
  • Roanoke officials are preparing for the annual Heart Walk to raise funds for heart health. Organizers will announce the route and start time soon — residents are encouraged to join the event.  WDBJ7

  • The Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors said low new construction is shrinking home inventory and giving sellers an edge. Homes in Roanoke, Salem and Botetourt County sell faster than in Franklin County—buyers may come back as mortgage rates drop.  WDBJ7
