- ➤ The Roanoke Valley SPCA continues its Visiting Pets Program by sending trained dogs to local senior and assisted living centers for comfort and companionship. On Monday, shelter dog Reesie visited Springtree Health and Rehabilitation Center+ her visit brought bright smiles to the residents. WSLS 10

- ➤ Goodwill Industries of the Valleys is offering affordable Halloween costume options, including a Wednesday Addams look for about $25 and a witch costume for around $20. The nonprofit store is hosting a costume contest that will award $250—shoppers must post their look on social media by Nov. 2. WSLS 10
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Kendig Awards honored muralist Jon Murrill and Charles Price for their contributions to the arts, with awards presented by Hollins University and Roanoke College—additional honors recognized a nonprofit cultural endowment and special achievements in arts support. Roanoke will hold a public workshop on the Downtown and River’s Edge Parking Study on Oct. 27 at Berglund Center where residents can share their feedback. Cardinal News

- ➤ Roanoke Medicare recipients can get free counseling from the Local Office on Aging through the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 at a new off-site location on 4822 J Valley View Blvd. NW near Valley View Mall — appointments are offered Monday through Thursday from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m., and walk-ins and telephone sessions are available. - ➤ An ADHD counselor in Roanoke is launching a fitness training program to help patients manage their challenges. The program—combining exercise with counseling—will offer guided workout sessions and support to improve focus. WDBJ7
- ➤ Today is Global Handwashing Day and Dr. Allan Capin at Cleveland Clinic said everyone should wash their hands for at least 20 seconds+especially after touching shared surfaces+ to reduce the spread of germs. WSLS 10
- ➤ Roanoke will host a Walk to End Alzheimer’s event this weekend to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s research—organizers said local volunteers and sponsors are preparing for the event. WDBJ7

- ➤ Colony House Motor Lodge reopened with a ribbon cutting this morning after being dark since 2018. The 67-room motel built in the 1950s now offers renovated rooms, a refreshed meeting space and pool with live music planned for next year—its owners from Berglund Automotive worked with Hill Studios to secure a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
