  • The Roanoke Outside Festival — GoFest — returns downtown and at Explore Park from Friday through Sunday, marking its 15th year with free admission, live music at Elmwood Park, a popular lumberjack show, outdoor adventure providers and a $5 5K on Sunday to support the Roanoke Outside Foundation.  WFIR News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • New Dunkin’ opens today in Roanoke at 536 Orange Avenue Northeast, offering merchandise giveaways and free samples from 5 a.m. and an official ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m.—franchise owner George Ross will donate $1,500 to Special Olympics of Virginia on behalf of the Coastal Franchising network. On Thursday the store will offer a Dunkin’ VIP Card for a free medium beverage and on Friday the first 150 customers will receive 100 days of free coffee.—  WSLS 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Roanoke increased by 1.9 cents last week to an average of $2.85 per gallon on Monday, October 13, as reported by GasBuddy from 155 local stations (prices ranged from $2.54 to $3.19 per gallon). The monthly rate remained unchanged and was 18.3 cents lower than last year, while national averages suggest a drop below $3 may come soon.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marvin Moss, 88, retired from a long career in public service in Fluvanna County after he helped save over 5,000 acres of historic land and built a cultural center with an Eastern Orthodox monastery—leaving a legacy that supports future community involvement.  WVTF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Agricultural experts warned that chickens face a higher risk of avian influenza as cooler weather and migratory birds increase exposure, following a joint Oct. 8 press release from VDACS and DWR. Poultry owners are urged to keep birds indoors and follow strict biosecurity measures—using separate boots and hand sanitizer—to prevent the spread of the virus.  WVTF

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Roanoke County is studying whether it has enough affordable housing as rising prices and low wages challenge residents—RKG Associates presented job and commuting data to highlight the issue. The study may prompt zoning changes and a broader mix of housing options with recommendations expected by early next year.  WVTF
