COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction is underway at the Wasena skate park in Roanoke today as crews install an underground stormwater system and plan to shape the terrain for park features and a pump track — the project costs $1.6 million and officials ask residents to avoid the area.  WSLS 10
  • The Goshen First Aid Crew will host its second annual fall festival on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the carnival grounds on Maury River Road – local vendors will offer crafts, baked goods, yard sale items and food while proceeds from the chicken sale support the volunteer EMS rescue squad.  WSLS 10
  • The Vinton Fall Festival is set for October 11 in Vinton—organizers have not yet shared further details about the event.  WDBJ7
  • Philip Morris International's US businesses have given over $3.6 million to local Virginia groups since 2021—helping CARITAS, United Way, Meals on Wheels, Special Olympics, RIFF Arts Institute and Let’s Go Services. Senior Vice President Marian Salzman said the effort meets real needs and shows practical support for the community.  WSLS 10
  • Hunters for the Hungry has worked since 1991 to use deer donations to feed people in need across Virginia — it has processed over 8.1 million pounds of venison to make meals for the elderly, veterans, homeless and others. Hunters donate field-dressed deer and money helps cover processing costs so that every dollar creates three meals.  WFXR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The veterinary teaching hospital is waiting for final approval to start its planned expansion and renovation that will add more treatment space and modern facilities. Officials expect a decision soon so construction will begin after permits are approved.  WDBJ7
  • The Virginia Department of Education awarded $183,200 to Amherst County Public Schools — funds to install cameras, radios, upgraded locks, and an updated ID badge reader system at six schools. Assistant Superintendent Tim Hoden said work has started and new measures will be complete by May with a $45,000 match helping cover costs.  WDBJ7

FINANCE NEWS

  • Kathryn Matherly from Freedom First Credit Union said that residents can manage their finances this spooky season—she urges those needing help to use the Financial Empowerment Center’s free one-on-one counseling session.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 18, the state board approved new historical highway markers by the Department of Historic Resources across Virginia—sites include Dr. Elbyrne Grady Gill in Roanoke, and markers will be installed over six months as sponsors cover the $3,000 cost.  WDBJ7
  • On Thursday night, Virginia governor candidates Spanberger and Sears prepared for their only debate—Spanberger planned to highlight her bipartisan record while Sears warned that her policies were too extreme. Political analyst Richards said early voting could lessen the debate's impact on undecided voters.  ABC 13

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Virginia Tech is exploring the possibility of selling the historic Hotel Roanoke as key partnership agreements near expiration— a move that may lead to reinvesting funds in local projects— officials said. The decision will be made jointly with the Virginia Tech Foundation and the City of Roanoke.  ABC 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Roanoke College’s baseball team mourns Eddie Kaufman who died this week after nearly a two-year fight with leukemia—his teammates remember his bright smile and strong work ethic. The team will honor his memory by wearing orange patches during every game and displaying his number 36 at Salem Memorial Field.  WSLS 10
