COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Roanoke and 202 Social House will host a free movie night at Market Square on October 24 showing the original Ghostbusters rated PG. Pre-show activities begin at 6:00 p.m.—guests may bring chairs and blankets while enjoying popcorn, candy bags, and a bite to eat at 202 Social House.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke College mourns the loss of student baseball player Eddie Kaufman — a sophomore who fought T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia — after his passing on Tuesday.  ABC 13
  • Local officials will hold Tuesday of Honor on October 14 to pay tribute to hometown veterans with planned ceremonies and moments of reflection—demonstrating community respect. The event will honor those who served and highlight local pride in their sacrifice.  WDBJ7

  • Jersey Mike’s Subs in Daleville opened on October 8 at 133 Market Center Way—launching a fundraising campaign to benefit Lord Botetourt High School. Coupon holders may donate a minimum of $3 for a sub until October 12.  WFXR-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge celebrated its tourism success at a recent summit in Roanoke—highlighting over $2.5 million in spending from the USA Cycling Endurance Mountain Biking National Championships and a 25% jump in visitor spending—and announced a new holiday campaign launching next week to boost visits. This move is expected to further fuel the region's economic growth.  WFXR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mariana Hermosilla, a Spanish teacher at North Cross School, became a U.S. citizen in August after 21 years in the country and a long process of obtaining her green card + she now shares her journey in the classroom to help students understand the challenges of achieving citizenship and embracing dual heritage.  WFXR-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center will release an Eastern Screech-Owl on Friday, October 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Starkey Park South. The owl was admitted in May after being found upside down and entangled in patio furniture and has been rehabilitated for five months due to leg injuries.  WFXR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today at 7 p.m. candidates Abigail Spanberger and Winsome Earle-Sears will face off in the Virginia gubernatorial debate at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center—located at Norfolk State University—as the event airs live on local stations.  WFXR-TV
  • Early voting is underway as AG nominee Jones faces pressure to withdraw amid leaked texts and a reckless driving conviction—raising concerns about ballot confusion if he drops out. Radford University professor Chapman Rackaway said that if Jones withdraws, extra ballots will need to be printed, which may complicate Virginia’s election process.  WFIR News
  • Campbell County supervisors voted 5 to 2 on Tuesday to reject a Mesh Capital LLC data center proposal in Concord because residents feared strain on water supplies and rising electricity costs — Botetourt County is preparing water infrastructure plans to support a potential Google facility that may use millions of gallons daily.  WFIR News
  • Roanoke City Council approved three flood mitigation projects after receiving $7.1 million from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation—two projects will remove property along Tinker Creek and the Roanoke River for safer water flow while a third will study Trout Run and Horton's Branch watersheds.  WFXR-TV
