- ➤ Sleep in Heavenly Peace partnered with the Roanoke Elk’s Lodge to build 40 bunk beds for children in need using donated lumber from Lowe's—volunteers have built over 2300 beds since 2019 to help families in the community. WDBJ7
- ➤ Roanoke County is set for a busy October with fall events including the Bent Mountain Fall Festival on October 11 at the Bent Mountain Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.+ the GO Outside Festival from October 18-20 in Downtown and Explore Park and Spooktacular Saturday on October 25 at Explore Park, where families will enjoy crafts and zip line adventures. - ➤ Elani Spencer, the City of Roanoke's first Youth Poet Laureate, will lead a free poetry workshop for U.S. military veterans at the Roanoke Main Library at 706 South Jefferson Street on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 2 to 3 p.m. The workshop will let veterans learn to turn their military experiences into poetry while journals, pens and refreshments are provided. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Appalachian Power will ask state regulators for permission to reduce the fuel expense added to customer bills, which may result in a lower monthly charge for most customers. The proposal — one of several issues APCO will present to the State Corporation Commission in the coming months — reflects the company's plan to adjust costs for customers. WVTF
- ➤ Today the Roanoke City Council will get an update from the parks and recreation department that reviews work done since 2019—such as adding nine miles of trails and reopening Washington Park Pool—and outlines planned improvements on parks and greenways from 2025 to 2030.
