- ➤ Roanoke marked Domestic Violence Awareness Month with its 18th annual 'A Walk in Their Shoes' event that honored survivors and remembered victims. Organizers and local advocates gathered to raise awareness and offer life-saving resources — working to break the silence on domestic violence. WSLS 10
- ➤ The 4th Annual Dinner Under the Stars is set to take place in Roanoke tonight—organizers say the event will feature local food, live music and community engagement. WDBJ7
- ➤ Roanoke residents and city officials are testing new ways to get around without a car during the Week Without Driving Challenge—many finding that slow bus schedules and limited service to parts of the region make travel tough. - ➤ After Hurricane Helene caused major flooding in 2024, Lora Evans worked hard for a year to fix her home on South Carrico Street in Fries—today it stands restored and is offered as an Airbnb rental. - ➤ Jason Raines and partner Paul Shull patrol the greenways on a new Park Service Unit—educating users on safety rules and supporting community trust. The unit will ease other officers' duties and will begin field training next week—reinforcing a focus on public safety. WDBJ7

- ➤ On Friday, the Justice for Me advocacy group and non-profit FEDUP held a peaceful protest at the Roanoke City Courthouse to honor local gun violence victims and highlight unsolved cases. - ➤ Hospitality House of the Blue Ridge will soon launch a capital campaign to remodel a new home that will help visitors coming for medical treatment. Since 2019 the group placed out-of-towners in hotels with reduced rates + it aims to have its own facility in a few years. WFIR News

- ➤ A new restaurant named The Haven will open at 108 Campbell Ave., replacing Awful Arthur’s as Amy Dornton leads the renovation. The eatery will offer American classics like macaroni and cheese and burgers by year end — a change that promises a fresh dining spot in downtown Roanoke. The Roanoke Tribune

- ➤ Tim Greenway, a long-serving school board member, faces a charge for election paperwork errors—issues flagged with his re-election forms—while he remains on the ballot with a hearing set for Oct. 16. WDBJ7
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ TAP, a community action agency, runs youth programs that help local students build confidence and learn job skills through workshops and talent events.
