  • Today, the Council of Community Services and Roanoke Valley Violence Prevention host ‘A Walk in Their Shoes’ at noon at the Salvation Army on Dale Avenue—this free event includes survivor testimonials, an honor and remembrance ceremony, a symbolic walk, and a resource fair to raise domestic violence awareness.  WSLS 10

  • Local Colors, a nonprofit celebrating international cultures, will host its 6th annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Saturday in downtown Roanoke—residents are invited to join the festivities.  WFIR News
  • The 38th Annual Craftsmen's Fall Classic Art and Craft Festival starts today at the Berglund Center, offering a place for holiday shopping and support as the second largest food drive for Feeding Southwest Virginia. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County leaders said the damaged Forest Level Baptist Church will soon be safely demolished as discussions continue with church staff after a December explosion caused by a gas leak left the building unstable for nine months — a set timeline for demolition has not been provided.  ABC 13
  • Franklin County Fire & EMS will receive $47,000 from the Pipeline Emergency Response Grant to buy gas detectors and train both career and volunteer responders for pipeline emergencies — the funds are expected to be released by the end of the month.  WDBJ7
  • The planned federal shutdown will not disrupt most outdoor activities on national forests and parks—hunting, fishing and hiking will continue even though some visitor centers and campgrounds may be closed. Virginia Rep Morgan Griffith said that if access is limited, his office will work on a solution.  WFXR-TV
  • Local organizations may face funding shortages if the government shutdown continues—officials are reviewing emergency measures to keep essential services operating. Community groups are planning further discussions to address potential delays in public programs.  WDBJ7
  • Virginia Gov. Youngkin issued Executive Directive 14 on Thursday to protect women and girls in sports and locker rooms by barring biological males from female competitions and using designated changing areas—three female college athletes had filed a complaint in August prompting the measure. This directive aims to ensure safety and privacy in female-only spaces across the state.  ABC 13
  • Vice Chairman Phil North will host a Hollins District Community Meeting at Green Ridge Recreation Center — 7415 Wood Haven Road in Roanoke on Monday, October 6, with the presentation set to begin at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will cover topics such as economic development projects, planning, transportation and capital projects, and county budget information.  Roanoke County

  • Carilion Clinic is working to improve access to free mammograms by setting up screening centers in rural areas as part of its Every Woman’s Life program funded by the Virginia Department of Health.
