COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Star City StrongFest event scheduled for September 27th in Roanoke celebrates strength, sports and community—organizers Leigh Stover and Lisa Thompson say the free event is open to everyone.  WDBJ7
  • On Tuesday, September 23, Aimee Brown with the Franklin County Humane Society brought to Furry Friends an adoptable pet—Vadar, an 11-month-old Belgian Malinois mix weighing about 43 pounds. He is friendly, playful, and clever but does not get along with cats and would benefit from additional training for an active household.  WFXR-TV
  • Rescue Mission of Roanoke is hosting a pop-up registration on Saturday, September 27 to prepare for its 20th Anniversary Drumstick DASH at Elmwood Park during Star City Strongfest. The Dash Flash event runs from noon to 1:00 p.m.—offering music, discount registration and a chance to win limited-edition merchandise to support meals and services for those in need.  WFXR-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Golden Cactus Brewing, located in Roanoke's West Station area, celebrated its fifth anniversary and revealed that head brewer Evan Graham suffered from COVID-19 related smell blindness that affected beer recipes until recently. He now invites local beer drinkers to re-taste the improved brews.  WFIR News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke Public Library, Roanoke Public Schools, and Virginia Tech are hosting the fourth annual Flip the Fair—an event where graduate students explain science research in simple terms for fifth graders who will serve as judges at the Melrose Branch Library on September 27. The fair gives students from high-poverty schools a chance to see STEM role models and ask questions about real-world science.  WFXR-TV

FINANCE NEWS

  • Governor Youngkin said yesterday that eligible taxpayers who owed tax in 2024 and filed by November 3 will get up to $200 if they filed alone and up to $400 if they filed jointly this fall. Those who filed before July 1 will get their money by direct deposit by October 15—others will receive a paper check after any tax debt is deducted.  The Roanoke Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders said they need better youth recreation programs to fix local park issues and support safe play. In the Quadrant Series, longtime activist Theresa Gill-Walker was interviewed while a grant bid for the Washington Park cottage failed, leaving its future in doubt—residents now watch for the next steps.  The Roanoke Rambler
  • Roanoke County households with septic systems and incomes at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Line are urged to apply for one of the few remaining free septic pump-outs this season—this program aims to reduce environmental impacts and prevent property damage from failing systems. The program is a partnership among Roanoke County, the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission, and the Virginia Environmental Endowment.  Roanoke County
  • The Roanoke County Police Department has launched the Forge Your Path internship for college juniors and seniors planning careers in law enforcement—participants will receive hands-on training and may secure a job offer upon meeting all standards, with applications open until October 31.  WFXR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A national survey of over 2,700 mothers shows one in three Virginia moms struggled to access mental health care for their children owing to high costs, long waitlists and few providers. Advocates urge lawmakers to expand school-based services and improve insurance coverage—steps aimed at easing the crisis.  WFXR-TV
  • A Cleveland Clinic study found that changes in the Neurobeachin gene affected weight loss with GLP-1 drugs — those with a responsive gene were 82% more likely to lose weight while those with a non-responsive gene were 50% more likely not to lose weight, and researchers plan to test if a combined score can guide personalized obesity treatment.  WSLS 10
