COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 700 students from 35 schools will gather today at William Fleming High School for the Special Olympics Big Feet Meet, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event features running, walking, and a softball throw along with an opening ceremony that lights the Flame of Hope at 11 a.m.—hosted by 200 local students.  WSLS 10
  • Angels of Assisi are asking residents to donate pet food supplies or adopt pets this weekend—Director of Development Carol Jessee outlined events at Sinkland Farms and Pack the Pallet.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mayor Cobb is hosting a business summit to boost Roanoke's economy by bringing small business owners and entrepreneurs together. The event features two tracks—one for nonprofits and one for for-profit businesses—covering topics such as AI, licensing, and workforce development.  WSLS 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Monday, September 22, Roanoke gas prices rose by nine cents to $2.86 per gallon at 155 stations, reported by GasBuddy—national prices reached $3.14 per gallon with a 2.2 cent increase.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Windsor Hills District Community Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 25 at South County Library—6303 Merriman Road, with the presentation set to begin at 6:00 p.m. Board of Supervisors Chairman David Radford will lead discussions on economic development, transportation and capital projects, county budget information and community questions.  Roanoke County
  • Virginia is the first state to launch the USDA Farm Recovery Block Grant Program to aid farmers and timber landowners hit by Hurricane Helene by offering $60.9M in disaster assistance; the program opened on Sept 22 and will accept online applications for 45 days, ending Nov 6. A virtual training session is scheduled for Sept 24 at 5:30 p.m. — experts will guide applicants through the process.  WSLS 10
  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin reassessed his state's role in the PJM Interconnection grid after a regional power body risked sharply raising power bills for Virginians. He called for electric grid reforms—aiming to protect households from higher costs.  Roanoke.com
  • Virginia State Police and partner agencies including Roanoke County Police Department will launch 'Operation Drive Safe 460' on U.S. Route 460 on Friday, September 26. The 24-hour effort will check for speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving and missing seat belts—aiming to reduce preventable crashes on the busy route.  WFXR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Roanoke County Public Schools held a community meeting Monday afternoon on suicide prevention after a 10-year-old died by suicide six months ago & officials explained warning signs such as changes in eating, sleeping, or mood while urging families to use school counselors and mental health services. They stressed that open talks about mental health can help protect local youth.  WSLS 10
  • Virginia Tech sophomore Conner Price started the Jason Price Foundation to honor his late father and support Carilion Clinic’s new Cancer Center—he will host a poker tournament fundraiser on October 12th at Virginia Tech’s University Club with proceeds split between the new cancer wing at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and his clothing line 10 South Legacy.  WSLS 10

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Harlem Globetrotters announced Monday they will play at Berglund Center on March 11 next spring as part of their 100-year tour centennial celebration in Roanoke — the team will debut new jerseys and offer fan experiences like pre-game access and VIP bench tickets.
