COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Layman Family Farms opened its pumpkin patch this weekend in Bedford and families gathered for hayrides and pumpkin picking before fall begins. The farm has been a tradition for over 20 years and will remain open every weekend through Halloween—drawing visitors for seasonal fun.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Our Daily Bread Bakery and Bistro announced via Facebook that it will close its Downtown Roanoke and Vinton locations—its Brambleton site will remain open.  WDBJ7
  • Today, the Mayor’s Business Summit brings local entrepreneurs and small business owners together at Virginia Western Community College’s Whitman Auditorium from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for sessions on funding, team building and a one-stop Business Launch Site—breakfast and lunch are provided.  WSLS 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in the Hollins, Vinton and Windsor Hills districts will elect a candidate to the Roanoke County School Board. The voter guide features experienced officials—like David Linden and Cheryl Facciani—and educators who focus on school safety, teacher pay and parental involvement.  The Roanoke Times
  • The Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC launched its 2025–26 Pioneers in Biomedical Research Seminar Series with 18 renowned scientists discussing topics from neuroscience to health policy—free lectures run every Friday at 11 a.m. in Roanoke at the Health Sciences and Technology campus at 4 Riverside Circle or via livestream.  The Roanoke Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin met virtually on Thursday with over 1,500 benefits workers to boost SNAP FORWARD—a statewide program aimed at reducing SNAP errors and ensuring families get timely support. The initiative, following Executive Directive 13 from August, will add training, household verification and technology investments to protect taxpayer funds, especially for nearly 874,000 eligible families.  The Roanoke Star
  • On Tuesday, Roanoke County supervisors will ask the Roanoke Valley Transportation Planning Organization to use Surface Transportation Block & Carbon Reduction Program funds for four projects. Proposed projects include Phase 2 of the West Roanoke River Greenway, an East Roanoke River gap study, a mid-block crosswalk at Brambleton Avenue, and a railroad crossing elimination study for Layman Road & Glade Creek Road.  Cardinal News
