COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Visitors who use wheelchairs can now reserve a new all-terrain motorized wheelchair—free to use—for rides along the unpaved New River Trail, which runs beside the river. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance so more people can enjoy nature this year.  WVTF

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crystal Creek Drive at the 5700 block is closed until further notice due to a low‐hanging wire — crews are headed to the scene, according to Roanoke County Police.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jeff and Ashley Hash performed at a historic Vatican concert on Sept 13 at St. Peter’s Square with over 253,000 fans watching. The couple, who met as high school students, said their faith helped them share their music at an event directed by Pharrell—marking a big moment in their journey.  The Roanoke Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • More than $11 million in federal funds were announced on September 18 by Gov. Youngkin and Congressman Griffith for economic development in Southwest Virginia through the AMLER program — a federal initiative that transforms former mining sites into assets. The Virginia Department of Energy is accepting applications for the ninth round with proposals due by December 18 — a deadline expected to boost local job growth.  WFXR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early in-person absentee voting began Friday, September 19 at the Elections Office on 900 Chestnut St. in Vinton and the Brambleton Center Elections Satellite Office on 3738 Brambleton Ave.—Registered voters may cast ballots from Monday through Friday, September 22 to October 31 with special Saturday hours on October 25 and November 1.  Roanoke County
  • VDOT reminds drivers to follow safety rules at highway-rail crossings during Operation Lifesaver’s See Tracks? Think Train! Week from Sept. 15 to 21 as data shows 176 incidents—resulting in 44 injuries and 18 fatalities from 2021 through July, with most incidents linked to ignored warning devices.  WFXR-TV
  • On September 19, Attorney General Miyares filed a lawsuit against Ticketmaster & Live Nation alleging that the companies used deceptive practices that hurt consumers. The lawsuit seeks legal relief and may lead to additional court proceedings.  WDBJ7
  • Tonya Hibbert is a clinical social worker in Roanoke who grew up in New York and Virginia and worked at Immigration and Naturalization and with Roanoke City Police before joining the Department of Social Services. She values family and community — guiding her role in coordinating emergency mental health services while pursuing further education.  The Roanoke Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northside High School hired Ryann Hubbard as the new head coach for its girls’ varsity basketball team—he was selected by Athletic Director Brett Newman because of his proven record and leadership. The Roanoke native, who led Roanoke Catholic to a historic state championship run, said he will work to improve the team’s performance following a 3—20 season last year.  The Roanoke Tribune
