- ➤ Roanoke City Public Schools said that William Fleming High School was placed on hold and secure on Thursday after police began investigating a reported threat made on social media—officials kept students inside while a school resource officer and administrators monitored doors—and assured that classes continued. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The historic 611 locomotive is chugging along the tracks and will start scenic fall trips on Sept. 26 from Goshen, offering an 80-mile ride through the Shenandoah Valley. The crew met at 6 a.m. on Thursday + they prepared the tool car to carry the needed supplies for the journey. WSLS 10
- ➤ Opera Roanoke begins its 50th Anniversary season Sunday at the Jefferson Center with a tribute concert titled Love and Sacrifice: A Tribute to the Heart of Opera Roanoke—where singer Amy Cofield performs selections from La Traviata, Madama Butterfly and Thaïs to honor Maestro Steven White in his final appearance with the company. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Roanoke County Schools held a session at William Byrd High School to warn parents that giving smartphones to kids (ages 0 to 14) may harm brain development and lead to dangers like online risks. The district will hold more talks with the next one scheduled for October 16 (at Hidden Valley Middle School). WDBJ7

- ➤ Governor Glenn Youngkin signed on September 15th a law that makes it a class 5 felony for landlords and property managers to force tenants into sexual acts by threatening their housing—penalties increase if the victim is under 15 with fines up to $100,000 and prison terms from one to 20 years. - ➤ Today Gov. Youngkin signed a law that makes it a Class 5 felony for landlords and property managers to threaten eviction, financial loss, or property damage to force sexual acts plus it sets harsher penalties for cases against minors with fines up to $100,000. The law strengthens protections for tenants and vulnerable citizens in Virginia. WSLS 10
