COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 33rd annual Antique and Classic Boat Show will be held Saturday at Goodhue Boat Company from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is expected to draw about 2,000 visitors (with roughly 40 boats on display) while fundraising efforts aim to raise $10,000 (for local services).  WSLS 10
  • The VT Corps of Cadets and first responders climbed Lane Stadium on September 11 to honor victims of the 9/11 attacks — they shared a moment of silence and respectful tribute during the memorial event.  WDBJ7
  • Food Lion donated $3000 in shelf-stable foods and provided $6000 for physical improvements at the Manna Food Pantry today—local employees sorted the donation as Feeding Southwest Virginia led the Hunger Action Month effort. This support came from the Roanoke Rescue Mission's initiative to address food insecurity.  WFIR News
  • Roanoke officials are starting a new program today to help seniors drive more comfortably—safety experts and instructors will provide tailored support to boost their confidence behind the wheel.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke’s annual GoFest will be held October 17-19 to encourage residents to go outside and enjoy local events and activities—organizers plan a range of family-friendly outdoor experiences.  WFIR News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Opera Roanoke will open its 50th season on September 21, marking the organization's anniversary and the final performance of longtime artistic director Steven White—who has led the opera for more than half its history. White will step down after this performance as the group celebrates its milestone.  WFIR News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nonprofits warn that new federal SNAP work requirements and funding cuts will push more families to rely on food pantries already stretched thin — local agencies face growing challenges as state cost shifts add uncertainty to food help services.  Cardinal News
  • The Western Virginia Water Authority board voted unanimously on two agreements that support water needs for a potential Google data center in Botetourt County—one agreement directs the county to develop an additional water supply and the other requires Google to pay for necessary water lines and infrastructure; Google has not yet filed any formal applications.  WVTF

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Rob Gourdie, known for his work in heart research, will open the 2025–26 Maury Strauss Distinguished Public Lecture Series at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC on Sept. 18 at 2 Riverside Circle in Roanoke; doors open at 5 p.m. and the talk starts at 5:30 p.m.  The Roanoke Star
  • A new program called Car-fit will help seniors learn how a proper driver’s seat fit can boost safety and comfort; it will be held at North Roanoke Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 16th from 10am to 1pm. Delaine Caldwell of the Local Office on Aging and Katie Wilson of LewisGale Medical Center will lead the event — experts will show techniques that improve driving safety.  WDBJ7
  • State Health Commissioner Karen Shelton signed a statewide standing order on September 10 allowing pharmacists to administer the updated COVID-19 vaccine for 2025-2026 to people 65 and older and adults 18 to 64 with underlying conditions—this measure improves access without a prescription.  WSLS 10

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • This morning, Whitney Leeson from the Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation said she opposes the zoning change that would allow by-right multifamily units after four older houses were torn down in South Roanoke—while Alexander Boone from ABoone Real Estate Inc. accepted a bulldozer award for demolishing the houses to build a 22-unit apartment complex.  WFIR News
