ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters fought heavy flames at a single-family home on Merriman Road in Roanoke County at 4:35 p.m. on Saturday—crews stayed longer due to difficult conditions inside as they worked to put out the fire.  ABC 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Roanoke police are seeking a suspect after a man was fatally shot on September 7 in the city—officials report the investigation is ongoing and details remain limited.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke County Public Schools announced today that Halftime Live will return for the 2025 marching band season, offering free live+on-demand streams of high school band shows. The schedule includes Northside on September 19, Cave Spring on September 25, Glenvar on October 17, William Byrd on October 24 and Hidden Valley on October 31, with weather cancellations to be rescheduled.  The Roanoke Star

FINANCE NEWS

  • Five Virginians won a $100,000 prize on Saturday night when a ticket bought at the Gobble Stop in Barren Springs matched the winning numbers, and four others won in Farmville, Richmond, Stafford, and Winchester. The lottery generated an estimated $29.6 million profit for K-12 public education since May 31—funds that help boost school support—confirmed by state officials.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters can now register to vote and cast a provisional ballot on Election Day—until polls close at 7 p.m. on November 4th—which gives them the option to vote even after the October 24th deadline. College students must choose their mailing or campus address correctly or risk having their registration rejected, as officials warn.  WVTF

  • The Girl Scouts hosted their second annual mental health summit in Roanoke.  WDBJ7
  • More than 1,100 Girl Scouts and community members gathered at the Berglund Center in Roanoke on Sunday for the second annual mental health summit titled Operation H.E.R: Strong Minds, Strong Girls — the event featured keynote speeches, breakout sessions and wellness activities to build resilience and teach coping skills.  WDBJ7
