  • Lick Run CDC Farm will hold Okrafest on Sunday, September 7 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.—a festival celebrating the okra harvest with farm tours, music, art, and chef-led cooking demos; tickets cost $5 for adults and are free for children under 18 at the farm.  WFXR-TV

  • Vendors at the Sunflower Festival began rebuilding damaged booths after a storm on September 5—repair work continues to restore setups for upcoming events.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the National Weather Service in Blacksburg confirmed an EF1 tornado touched down in Halifax County during storms — it began near the intersection of Newton Farm Road and Cherry Hill Church Road and lifted near Loftis Road and Cherry Hill Church Road, with more details released Friday.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local two-time child cancer survivor started the BeHold BeGold organization to help those facing late effects from treatment—she is hosting the 2nd Annual Glaze For Gold event today at Glazed Bisque-It and tomorrow. The group aims to support childhood cancer survivors through these community efforts.  WFIR News
  • On September 5, Roanoke Valley residents supported a teen battling bone cancer by organizing visits, fundraising events, and care packages—each help aimed at easing his fight. Neighbors and local organizations coordinated their efforts to bring hope and comfort during his treatment.  WDBJ7
  • Today, the Salem VA Health Care System earned a five-star CMS rating for 2025—marking the third year in a row with top scores through improved specialty services, expanded appointment access and better mental health care. Ninety-three percent of veterans surveyed since January reported trust in the system.  WFIR News
