- ➤ LEAP, a local non-profit fighting food insecurity, will host a farm fare supper outside Wasena Park on September 14th—tickets cost $75 for adults and $45 for children as the event kicks off its fall fund drive for 2026. - ➤ A crash in Roanoke killed one person and injured eight as police suspect speed was a factor (officials are investigating the cause). WDBJ7
- ➤ Virginia State Police said six people died in auto crashes during Labor Day weekend from August 29 to September 1, 2025 — three crashes involved victims not wearing seatbelts and two were motorcycle incidents with one in Lynchburg — as troopers enforced the new law. WDBJ7

- ➤ A 100-year-old Halifax County woman, Edith Edmunds, makes quilts by hand that feature secret patterns used by enslaved women to guide escape on the Underground Railroad — her work has been shared nationally and locally to honor history and teach a message of hope. WDBJ7
- ➤ Madison Whitbeck, who earned awards as Miss Virginia 2025, competed in the Miss America pageant in Orlando where 52 contestants began their challenge on September 3 — she will face further rounds before a new Miss America is crowned on September 7 with a $50,000 scholarship. WDBJ7

- ➤ Virginia Tech scientists at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute are researching new ways to treat addiction by studying brain signals and medicine options.
