COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Tankster is a friendly dog now available for adoption at Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center—he has been at the shelter for over two months, is house trained, and is picky with other animals. The center charges $25 adoption fees until Aug. 31. WSLS 10
- ➤ In Roanoke, a nearly 100-year-old school building has re-opened as the Community Empowerment Center to help families with enrollment, school supplies, clothing, food, and health services. The center, once Lucy Addison High School that served black students during segregation, has assisted 200 locals since its opening in July — continuing a legacy of support. WDBJ7

- ➤ A single-vehicle accident struck a power pole at Hersberger Road and Bluebell Lane at 10:53 a.m. Friday — causing minor injuries, a power disruption, and an extended closing of the road. WSLS 10
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Franklin County school board met with parents to discuss problems at the Career and Technical Education center that has served thousands for 30 years (security and space issues have limited enrollment), and Superintendent Kevin Siers said the board will work with Rocky Mount on rezoning so they can plan renovations and add new programs. Further talks in September will set the stage for a design and financing plan that aims to better serve students in technical fields. WDBJ7
- ➤ Roanoke City Public Schools opened a Community Empowerment Center at Booker T. Washington on Friday that offers school, health and community services for families, including a welcome center, resource room and health center with immunizations and physicals — the center has already helped more than 300 families since its July start and supports households with English learners. - ➤ Virginia’s first adult high school, The Excel Center, opened at Melrose Plaza on August 25 with 50 students enrolled, and local and state leaders including Governor Youngkin attended the event—offering free childcare, transportation and career support to help adults earn a state-recognized diploma. - ➤ A new poll shows that housing is the top financial stress for Virginia voters this election year, with many in Roanoke feeling the impact of rising home prices. Residents say the cost is outpacing supply — they want legislators to act to expand affordable housing options. The Roanoke Times
- ➤ Mayor Joe Cobb delivered his State of the City Address on Aug 21 at Hotel Roanoke—he outlined plans to reduce gun violence, address substance use disorder and homelessness, and continue projects like the Wasena Bridge replacement and a new skate park. He said he will soon visit sister city Wonju to conduct city business. The Roanoke Tribune
