EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Credit Union and its Member One division will sponsor a mobile outreach program for Kids Square Children’s Museum—funding STEAM and financial education for elementary students in the Roanoke Valley over the next five years.  The Roanoke Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AHPS launched a new app on August 20—designed to secure bus schedules for transit riders—and officials said the tool will add real-time updates soon.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke County acquired the 1,100-acre Explore Park from VRFA for $2 after a lease that began in 2013 and an $8 million investment. Officials plan to use about 200 acres for commercial purposes—though visitors will not see any changes soon.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Virginia Fresh Match secured a $13,500 grant from the Wellspring Foundation to boost access to healthy fruits and vegetables in Washington, Grayson, Russell, and Smyth Counties. The grant will fund free vouchers that double SNAP, Medicaid, and WIC benefits at local farmers’ markets—supporting over 67 local food businesses.  WSLS 10
  • Bradley Free Clinic will hold its first benefit concert in Roanoke as federal funding remains uncertain amid more people losing health care insurance. Organizers plan to use the event to help raise funds and support services — a move that underscores the clinic's growing challenges.  WFIR News
