ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to a structure fire on the 1300 block of Goodwin Avenue on Saturday at 10:23 p.m.—finding a person dead, one firefighter injured, and damage estimated at $200,000.  ABC 13
  • Roanoke County Fire & Rescue responded to a house fire on the 1300 block of Goodwin Avenue at 10:23 p.m. on August 16—finding one resident dead, one firefighter injured, and about $200k in damage while officials reported no sign of foul play.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Roanoke fell by 5.1 cents per gallon over the last week, averaging $2.89 as of August 18. Rates are now 2.7 cents lower than last month and 33.3 cents less than last year—local data shows prices ranging from $2.59 to $3.99.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke City Public Schools is rolling out its student ID program districtwide today with a two-week grace period—students from Pre-K to high school and staff must wear their badges for safety and quick identification. The program, piloted in select schools last year, allows two free badge replacements before charging $5 for additional badges.  WDBJ7

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Roanoke is investing in downtown improvements to boost business and foot traffic; a yearlong parking study will begin next month using a $770,000 grant from the Department of Transportation to upgrade areas around Amtrak amid complaints about high parking prices. A $50,000 state grant will restore awnings at the longstanding farmer’s market — city officials say the updates and plans for more housing options aim to revitalize the historic district.  WSLS 10

  • Roanoke has seen more apartments open as the population grows, with downtown projects like The Bower — which opened last year with 27 new units that include outdoor spaces and retail — leading the way. Rent prices are rising as local officials work to boost housing inventory to help meet demand.  WSLS 10
