ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Roanoke County school bus backed into Brittany Hayes’s 2017 Honda Civic parked in Old Southwest on April 17, causing about $3,500 in damage—VA Corp released the final $215.69 payment Friday to clear the repair delay.  Roanoke.com
  • Three residents were displaced after a house fire on Sunday at about 7:15 p.m. in the 4300 block of Buck Mountain Road — firefighters controlled the blaze in about an hour, the displaced are staying with family, a dog was rescued, and a cat remains missing while the Fire Marshal investigates the cause.  WSLS 10
  • Four people were injured in a boat crash on Lake Moomaw in Bath County Saturday, August 16—officials said the vessel struck an island and ejected all occupants who were not wearing life jackets—while alcohol was not a factor.  WDBJ7
  • A kitchen fire on the 2500 block of Denniston Ave SW in Roanoke displaced three people after firefighters controlled the flames by 5:51 p.m.—no injuries were reported and officials continue investigating the cause following a 5:39 p.m. call.  ABC 13

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local abstract painter Christine Meeks will present her work at the New York, I Love You exhibition at Agora Gallery in Chelsea from October 8—14. Her selection marks a major milestone that brings her vibrant art from the Blue Ridge Mountains to a renowned global art district.  The Roanoke Star
  • The Celebration of African Cultures will take place Saturday, August 23 at Countryside Park in Roanoke from 1-4 p.m., offering free music, dance, food, and vendor exhibits. Local Colors and CommUnity ArtsReach organize the event—showcasing African traditions for families.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Roanoke City Council will hear from Richmond Vincent of Goodwill Industries on Melrose Plaza, a community center that offers a grocery store, a library branch, a bank branch, and will soon open an Excel Center school on Aug. 25 along with wellness and museum services. Later, officials will review a briefing on the police department’s new Crime Control Center — a system that uses real-time data from tools like Flock to support public safety.  Cardinal News
  • Virginia Regional Transit has expanded its demand response service—CORTRAN—into Roanoke County to serve eligible residents aged 65 and older or with disabilities. The service operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and charges $5.00 per one-way ride with limited boarding assistance.  The Roanoke Star

SPORTS NEWS

  • Two Roanoke youth boxing gyms will hold an amateur belt show at the Berglund Center on Sept. 27 to use boxing to fight gun violence and offer kids a safe activity. Champ’s Gym moved to a temporary spot after a lease dispute— and it now plans to raise money for a new community center while a new police-run gym also teaches boxing.  The Roanoke Times
