ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A downed tree blocked both northbound lanes on 220 near Franklin Road and Webb Road in Roanoke County late Friday morning — police later reopened one lane and warned drivers to expect slow traffic.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • Roanoke is collecting residents' stories and photos for the Roanoke Remembers project to mark the 40th anniversary of the Flood of '85 in early November, and over 60 memories have already been submitted. City officials plan to finish gathering accounts by early September and will share them online and at fall events—Flood.  WVTF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On the first day of school, Cave Spring High School named Hassane Doucure as the new knight for the class of 2026—he was chosen for his integrity and community leadership and will have his portrait displayed in the school hallway. School leaders and peers praised him for his active role in sports, debate, and volunteering.  WFXR-TV
  • Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy’s Roanoke Campus will welcome its first students on Wednesday, Aug. 20 as it starts the 2025-26 school year in Roanoke County—this launch marks an expansion of the school’s offerings.  The Roanoke Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local urgent care center is expanding its services ahead of the flu season—adding staff and extending hours to better care for patients as demand is expected to rise.  WDBJ7
  • The latest Roanoke Valley Healthy Living Index survey shows schoolchildren in Roanoke City are getting healthier, as reported by WFIR's Gene Marrano. The survey — done every three years — marks progress in child wellness.  WFIR News
  • Carilion Taubman Cancer Center reached 97% of its $100 million target and is under construction — the center is planned to lower local cancer deaths when it opens. The project will help reduce cancer mortality rates in our community.  WFIR News
