- ➤ Roanoke families can attend the Cuts with Cops event on Saturday, Aug. 9—starting at 10 a.m.—at Carilion Children’s Pediatric Medicine at 4348 Electric Road where free haircuts, school supplies, shoes, food, and back-to-school vaccines will be provided. WSLS 10
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Jim McGlothlin, a coal magnate—founder of the state’s first casino and a dedicated philanthropist who supported children through the Mountain Mission School—died Wednesday at age 85. He built a legacy in Southwest Virginia through his leadership at The United Company and helped fund projects that benefit communities in Grundy and Bristol. Cardinal News

- ➤ Family gathered at Loudon Park to honor 48-year-old Isaac Cunningham, who was fatally shot in Roanoke as his family recalled that his own son was also lost to gun violence, and they called for accountability & measures to address youth violence in the community. WDBJ7

- ➤ Alleghany Highlands Public Schools has banned cell phone use during the full school day (a bell-to-bell ban) as officials say the rule will help students focus in class. WDBJ7

- ➤ On Thursday night, more than 100 residents at a Greater Deyerle Neighborhood Association meeting urged the council to remove wolf-dogs from 3580 Windsor Road after a pack escaped and killed a deer nearby. City Attorney Tim Spencer prepared a draft ordinance and Mayor Joe Cobb, Councilwoman Evelyn Powers, and Councilman Nick Hagen will consider banning or regulating the hybrids on Monday—residents argue that the breeding business should meet strict safety standards.
