COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Summers Without Hunger Campaign partnered with Food Lion—one of several key donors—to distribute meals at West End Center for Youth on Monday to help local families facing food insecurity, and Food Lion will match donations up to $25,000 as Feeding Southwest Virginia continues its summer program across 39 communities. The campaign aims to ensure families do not have to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table.  WDBJ7
  • Today the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke will temporarily rename the Mill Mountain Star at 10 a.m.—honoring the late Susan Williams, a longtime public servant who led the Local Office on Aging and supported Meals on Wheels—by unveiling a commemorative plaque with remarks from local leaders Jeanne Bollendorf, Mayor Dr. Joe Cobb and Ron Boyd.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • A 16-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Isaac Lamont Cunningham on Sunday just before 12:30 a.m. in the 200 block of 12th St. SW in Roanoke—police say he is charged with second-degree murder while another arrest was made on Saturday in a separate shooting on Hunt Ave.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke is healing after a weekend of gun violence with three shootings, and Mayor Joe Cobb said he will double efforts to work with residents in Northwest Roanoke to lower future incidents—despite overall drops in homicides and gun crimes over the past two years.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Roanoke County Public Schools raised funds at a lemonade stand to buy hundreds of school supplies for children in need — supplies that were sorted, counted and distributed on Monday across local school districts — as they prepared students for the new school year.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Joe Cobb’s Hope and Home Task Force was approved by the city council in June, and he held a news conference Monday to explain plans to reduce homelessness in Roanoke by partnering with Virginia Tech and local groups to build permanent supportive housing plus schedule its first open public meeting in late August or early September.  WDBJ7
  • City of Roanoke launched its Hope and Home task force today to begin an 18‑month effort to address homelessness—built from recommendations by local residents and Virginia Tech research. City Manager Valmarie Turner briefed the City Council this morning while Mayor Joe Cobb will share more details at a later news conference.  WFIR News
