  • AARP Virginia will celebrate Social Security’s 90th anniversary in Roanoke with a news conference and ice cream social at 1:30 p.m. on August 14 at the Local Office on Aging. The events will continue with the Jupiter Rocket illuminated from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Virginia Museum of Transportation and a Grandparents Day activity on August 23—highlighting the program's impact on local residents and the community.  The Roanoke Star

  • A suspect in the councilman attack confessed, as court documents released July 31 confirmed the admission—authorities now review the details.  WDBJ7
  • A Roanoke man, Garrett Isaac Williams (22), was sentenced to 150 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to planning a robbery that led to his drug supplier’s murder (Hobbs Act Robbery) in February 2025.  WSLS 10

  • Mic Drop Club will launch a local public speaking club for women with an in-person event in Roanoke at Olde Salem Brewing on Sept. 18 and another in Lynchburg on Sept. 17—a virtual session is set for Aug. 7 to boost confidence in public speaking at work and community settings.  The Roanoke Star

  • Roanoke County wraps up season two of the Out of the Office podcast featuring RoCo Pros—an employee resource group for emerging professionals. The episode lets local listeners learn about County employees from various departments and discover their favorite local activities.  Roanoke County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctors and patients warn that Medicaid cuts under the Big Beautiful Bill may force rural hospitals to reduce staff or close, which could leave people in Union Hall and Martinsville without needed care. Lawmakers say hospitals will adjust and receive $50 billion to support rural health, but experts fear many Virginians could lose care over the next decade.  The Roanoke Times
  • On Thursday, Dairy Queen hosted Miracle Treat Day — donating $1 for every Blizzard purchase to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals in support of pediatric care. Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, which has received millions from past events, aims to raise $20,000 — funds that will buy new equipment and support its child life program.  ABC 13
