COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local officials announced that farmers’ markets in Pulaski and Roanoke each received $50,000 to upgrade their facilities—improvements will include modern equipment and renovated market spaces for local shoppers.  WDBJ7

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Neighbors in Northwest Roanoke helped a woman escape a kitchen fire on the 1900 block of Melrose Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Friday — one neighbor ran to assist while another alerted Roanoke Fire/EMS Station 5, and firefighters contained the blaze in 11 minutes with no injuries.  WFXR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Roanoke Police launched Operation Summer Shield to target violent offenders and curb reckless driving as summer crime rises, and in recent weeks officers with federal and probation partners served over 150 warrants—aiming to keep downtown nightlife safe.  WDBJ7

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Pulaski and Roanoke each got a $50,000 grant from Governor Glenn Youngkin’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development fund to upgrade their farmers’ markets—Pulaski will build a new open-air structure on Main Street for The Marketplace. In Roanoke, the funds will be used to install new awnings on the Historic Roanoke City Market to offer shelter and accommodate more vendors at its 42 stalls.  WDBJ7
  • In Roanoke, gasoline prices dropped 4.5 cents in the past week to reach $2.86 per gallon today according to GasBuddy's survey of 155 stations, and are 16.8 cents lower than a month ago and 47.1 cents lower than a year ago—national gasoline prices have risen nearly 10 cents per gallon while diesel increased almost 2 cents.  WDBJ7

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rescued bobcat kittens are recovering at the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center in Roanoke and can now be seen live on camera as their litter grows to three. Staff care for two males—one found near Floyd and one rescued from Wytheville—and a wild female found on June 20 in a backyard, with all set to be nurtured until they are ready to return to the wild.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Roanoke secured a $1 million award from the state’s Industrial Revitalization Fund to redevelop the former Walker Foundry site into a mixed-use project that will renovate over 16,000 square feet of industrial space and add nearly 275 new homes along with fresh food, wellness, and affordable housing. Developer Greg Kakness and Foundry Realty, who acquired the property in August 2024, plan a community-focused project that promises new jobs and enhanced local amenities — a transformational effort for the Norwich area.  WSLS 10
