  • Roanoke Valley Breakfast Lions Club celebrated 48 years of service on June 19 during its Charter Night Anniversary, honoring the club’s diverse history and community work. Longtime member JJ Johnson led the ceremony while new officers were installed — and LaTron Brown was recognized as Lion of the Year for his contributions.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • Churches in Roanoke held Prayer at the Curb yesterday from noon to 1 p.m.—members stepped onto sidewalks wearing white shirts and denim to offer prayer and hope amid recent community distress. Organizers said the grassroots event will return on Sept. 20 to unite local ministries and extend spiritual support.  WDBJ7
  • Empty Tomb Motorcycle Ministry will host its Ride & Cruise-In Against Bullying on August 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Villa Heights Baptist Church—featuring a bike ride, cruise-in, vendors and door prizes—and raise funds for anti-bullying advocacy.  WSLS 10
  • Peter and Carla Lewis received the Blue Ridge Legacy of Leadership Award last week for decades of service in the Roanoke Valley—Peter founded Apple Ridge Farm in 1975 where over 80,000 youth have benefitted and Carla preserved Black history at the Gainsboro Branch until she retired in 2009.  The Roanoke Tribune
  • Today, Verizon stores in our area will give away three million dollars' worth of backpacks at the 13th annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway event — the giveaway begins at 1 p.m. — with staff expecting lines before the event starts.  ABC 13
  • Radio Melrose launched its new 96.9 FM signal at a Switch On celebration at L.H. Hamlar Event Center on July 19—attendees received free tickets and one was chosen for an on-air debut. The station will extend its broadcast via 89.1 HD4 to reach Lynchburg, Bedford and nearby areas—while still finalizing its programming and hiring hosts.  The Roanoke Tribune

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house caught fire on the 1900 block of Melrose Avenue on Friday evening, displacing one person while bystanders helped the resident exit safely before fire crews swiftly controlled the flames—no injuries were reported.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • CommUNITY ARTSreach hosted an HBCU inspired stepdance event on July 19 at its building on Frontier Road with groups such as Gurlz With Attidudez, FFWT Steppers, PowerHouse and Elite Kutz performing. Founder Bernadette “BJ” Lark said the event exceeded expectations—drawing a crowd three times larger than planned and highlighting local youth talent.  The Roanoke Tribune
