COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Champ’s Gym in Roanoke—serving youths with boxing training and mentorship for 50 years—met with City Council on July 21st to request help in building a 7,500 square-foot center that will include two boxing rings and training zones for local youths.  WSLS 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A driver hit a home in Roanoke on July 25th—displacing two residents as police investigate the cause.  WDBJ7
  • Two residents were displaced after a car crashed into a home in Roanoke on Jul. 25; emergency crews responded and are investigating the incident—no further details have been released.  WDBJ7

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Roanoke restaurant owners are monitoring their sales after a 1% meals tax increase to 6.5% took effect July 1 — several report fewer customers and reduced profits from tax-inclusive pricing. The new tax revenue will fund overtime for city workers and help with maintenance backlogs while some owners call for reinvestment to boost downtown dining.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • A former teacher was sentenced on July 25 for supplying meth and fentanyl in southwest Virginia—authorities say his actions endangered community safety.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Roanoke Arts Commission launched the Arts Connect Neighbors catalog — offering 60 free artistic workshops to bring communities together. Local residents can explore a variety of creative opportunities through this new program.  WFIR News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge is ready to start its 37th Y After School Care Program for about 1,600 children ages three to 12 from Roanoke and nearby counties. The program runs from the end of the school day until 6 p.m. and offers meals, homework time and indoor and outdoor activities — funded by grants and fundraising to support families in need.  WFXR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport will conduct live burn training for aircraft rescue and firefighting teams with fire and public safety first responders joining in — the work will take place at Lot 18 near the air traffic control tower and Piedmont Airlines hangar. Officials warned residents that fire and smoke will be visible during training, though flights will not be affected — the sessions are scheduled for July 28–30 and August 6–8.  WFXR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cody Beck, a Forest teenager with a complex congenital heart defect who had four surgeries as a baby, underwent a nearly 14-hour heart transplant and is now recovering in the pediatric ICU & his family was notified when a match was found.  ABC 13
