- ➤ Two residents were displaced after a car crashed into a home in Roanoke on Jul. 25; emergency crews responded and are investigating the incident—no further details have been released. WDBJ7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Roanoke restaurant owners are monitoring their sales after a 1% meals tax increase to 6.5% took effect July 1 — several report fewer customers and reduced profits from tax-inclusive pricing. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge is ready to start its 37th Y After School Care Program for about 1,600 children ages three to 12 from Roanoke and nearby counties. The program runs from the end of the school day until 6 p.m. and offers meals, homework time and indoor and outdoor activities — funded by grants and fundraising to support families in need. WFXR-TV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport will conduct live burn training for aircraft rescue and firefighting teams with fire and public safety first responders joining in — the work will take place at Lot 18 near the air traffic control tower and Piedmont Airlines hangar. Officials warned residents that fire and smoke will be visible during training, though flights will not be affected — the sessions are scheduled for July 28–30 and August 6–8. WFXR-TV
