COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Roanoke native now living in Texas helped with flood recovery efforts in Southern Texas after severe floods damaged homes and forced search and rescue work, using his background in construction and equipment operation to clear debris while volunteers teamed up with first responders. Trip Ison III said he felt he had no choice but to join the cleanup effort—he continues to support family searches as recovery work goes on.  WDBJ7
  • The Taylor family visited the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department to thank the team that delivered baby Noa Emily at her home back in February—ensuring both her and her mom received prompt care. Noa, now nearly five months old, and her brother Barnes also enjoyed a tour of the station as the team welcomed the heartfelt visit.  WSLS 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on its new headquarters on Franklin Road—ending nearly 30 years in its downtown location. Chamber President Eric Sichau said the move will help the organization better support local businesses.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • A Virginia Tech student, Cristian Romo-Bermejo, a Mexican national, is held at a detention center in Farmville while his wife and attorney work to build his legal defense as ICE confirmed he is in custody without bond and an alleged assault on a law enforcement officer — if convicted may delay his green card process.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local talent performed at the Star Showcase — the event on July 22 featured acts from Roanoke that highlighted creative skills on stage.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roanoke County Public Schools was chosen by the Carnegie Foundation to join the Future of High School Network—one of 24 school systems in the nation selected to help improve high school education.  WFIR News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed the Roanoke logperch from the Endangered Species List after conservation work doubled its range from 14 to 31 streams in Virginia and North Carolina—showing that habitat restoration has helped the fish recover.  WVTF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roger Davis, a City of Roanoke automotive technician with 39 years of experience, was honored on July 21 with the NAFA Fleet Technician of the Year Award for his work on emergency vehicles, and City Council recognized his achievement. He continues to learn new techniques using Today's Class training app — a tool where he has become the top performer nationwide as he trains younger staff in heavy duty equipment repair.  The Roanoke Star
