- ➤ The third annual Charlotte’s Play Yellow Invitational Golf Tournament—set for Ballyhack Golf Club from July 18 to 20—will raise funds for the Life Ring Foundation—partnering with Carilion Clinic—to help children with cancer. WSLS 10
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Two adults, three children and three cats were displaced from their home at the 1100 block of 15th Street SE after a basement dryer ignited a fire at 2:50 a.m. July 14 — fire crews found flames in the basement and the family is receiving help from the American Red Cross. WDBJ7
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Roanoke police are seeking public help to locate a missing 17-year-old girl who was last seen on July 13 at 1 a.m. at her home in the 2800 block of Lansing Ave SW — she is described as black with brown hair and brown eyes, 5’03 in height and weighing 180 pounds. ABC 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center in Roanoke received a baby beaver kit from the Wildlife Center of Virginia on July 8 to join two other kits, and all will remain until a planned spring 2027 release. The kit was found swimming near people at the Rivanna River and is bottle-fed every five hours — its growth and socialization are carefully monitored. WSLS 10
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Two new residential addiction treatment programs — Strong Futures in Norton and Four Truths in Roanoke — will receive opioid abatement funds to help pregnant and parenting women keep their children with them during treatment for substance use disorder. Strong Futures will use nearly $597,000 to renovate an old hospital while Four Truths will expand its capacity with a $154,800 grant. Cardinal News
- ➤ Virginia health officials reported that since Memorial Day, six children under five drowned—exceeding totals from past summers—and they urge caregivers to closely supervise children near water, use fences and life jackets, and avoid distractions. ABC 13

- ➤ Virginia’s Blue Ridge will host the USA Cycling Endurance Mountain Biking Championship this week as thousands of cyclists compete on trails at Explore Park + Elmwood Park and Carvins Cove. Roanoke rider Abigail Snyder, entering her fifth championship, said she plans to push her limits as the event, which will return in 2026, draws fans and families. WFXR-TV
