- ➤ Assistant Chief Mack Mays died unexpectedly on July 10 and had served the Monelison Volunteer Fire Department for 12 years—no funeral arrangements have been announced. ABC 13
- ➤ On July 3, Tandem Behavioral Health held a community cookout at its Patterson Avenue facility where clients, staff, and community partners celebrated recovery progress with free hot dogs and hamburgers—recovery resources were shared and referral networks strengthened. The organization will plan additional events later this year to continue building community support. The Roanoke Tribune

- ➤ Goodwill Industries of the Valleys announced seven Roanoke community leaders will be honored as Living Legends at Melrose Plaza’s Grand Opening on Thursday, July 31 — the History Wall will display their contributions to education, civic leadership, journalism and cultural preservation. The rotating exhibit will update annually to continue recognizing these local changemakers. The Roanoke Tribune

- ➤ On Friday, the Roanoke Sheriff’s Office updated the CLEAN initiative launched on Earth Day, saying the team collected over 4,500 pounds of litter in two months and that school resource officers now help keep parks and neighborhoods safe — residents may submit cleaning requests when needed. - ➤ Sen. Kaine met with leaders from the Boys and Girls Club of SWVA on July 12 to discuss possible funding cuts that may affect their programs. The conversation focused on exploring ways to protect youth services amid budget concerns. WDBJ7
- ➤ Mayor Joe Cobb declared July 5 as 'Booker T. Washington Park Day' to honor the park’s 102nd anniversary and its history as the only playground for African Americans during segregation—now featuring updated courts and a new enhanced pool. - ➤ Sen. Tim Kaine met on Saturday with leaders from the Boys and Girls Clubs to discuss how federal funding cuts might hurt eight sites after Virginia did not receive its $108 million allotment.
