- ➤ AARP Virginia will hold free events—including an ice cream social at the Local Office on Aging on August 14—to celebrate 90 years of Social Security and its role in supporting local residents. Nearly 22,000 city residents and over 24,000 county residents receive Social Security, which injects hundreds of millions into the local economy. The Roanoke Star
- ➤ The Cave Spring Lions Club in Roanoke runs Virginia’s largest eyeglass recycling center that collects, sorts, and repairs donated glasses for those in need. This year the club shipped 87,000 pairs to 28 countries and local shelters — giving many a new view of life. WDBJ7

- ➤ 7 Brew, a drive-thru coffee stand, is set to open later this summer at 1251 W Main Street in Salem—creating 50 new jobs while offering over 20,000 drink combinations. WSLS 10
- ➤ Donnie D’s Bagels in Roanoke closed after a fire in May and is being restored by owners Donnie and Ashley DeGeorgis—who soda blasted the damaged concrete—to reopen in early August with new bagel equipment while most staff return from their Daleville location. WSLS 10

- ➤ Roanoke Police are searching for three missing girls who are believed to be together—11-year-old Harmony Barber and 13-year-old Serenity Barber were last seen leaving their home on King Charles Ave SE while 13-year-old Kaylani Dunbar left her home on Troutland Ave NW on July 8, and a CODI Alert was issued for Harmony due to her age. - ➤ The Virginia Department of Historic Resources approved nine historical markers today—one honors Lucy Addison for founding Roanoke’s first high school for Black students and another recognizes The Recorder as one of the oldest newspapers from the state’s smallest county, marking a new effort to highlight local history.
