COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Washington Park will host its 102nd anniversary Fourth of July celebration on July 5 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event honors the park’s history as a gathering space for black families — once called Dreamland — and will feature free activities, family reunions and local vendors.  WFXR-TV
  • CASA of Central Virginia urgently needs volunteers to serve as court-appointed special advocates for children facing abuse or neglect. HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts said the new COVID variant NB.1.8.1 gives a very bad sore throat that feels like razor blades. The Virginia Department of Health said there are no cases yet—experts warn that rising travel cases may bring the variant here as summer goes on.  WDBJ7
