- ➤ Northwest Roanoke will honor 7 people as 'Living Legends' at Melrose Plaza's grand opening next month; the event will pay tribute to local icons including Peter Lewis + Doris Ennis. WFIR News

- ➤ A house blaze in Hollins displaced a family and killed some chickens—local officials are investigating the cause. WDBJ7
- ➤ Roanoke Fire-EMS crews responded to a fire at the City Market Building downtown on Friday, June 20 and controlled the flames around 3 p.m.—streets were shut down while officials investigated whether Fork in the Market may have started the blaze. WFIR News

- ➤ Roanoke Kroger at 7223 Williamson Road, NW celebrated its $1.5 million renovation on Friday—improving deli, bakery, produce, pick-up and grocery areas—and presented a $1,500 check to Feeding Southwest Virginia. WSLS 10
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Court documents showed that police began searching Meagan Martin’s home after friends reported blood on the floor and walls — one friend sent a photo to police — and officers later arrested Joshua Presley for second-degree murder after finding bloody bedding that linked him to her death. WDBJ7
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Pedro Szalay will retire as the Artistic Director of Southwest Virginia Ballet at the end of June and will move with his husband to Scotland while still planning to work with local dancers—he has led the company for 18 years and remains grateful for his time here. WDBJ7
- ➤ On May 18th, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke dedicated a plaque to honor enslaved workers on its property facing Grandin Road, and Rev. Jen Raffensperger led the ceremony by reading each name aloud as part of the church's ongoing efforts with its Racial Justice Team to address past injustices. The Roanoke Tribune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new low-waste shop called Simply Refillery opened at Towers Shopping Center in Roanoke to help residents cut plastic waste by letting them refill household items in their own containers. Owner Brittany Fields said customers can buy products such as laundry detergent and dish soap by weight and that the store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. WDBJ7
