COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local community members will host 'Hope for Daisy' events to support a Roanoke family facing urgent needs—organizers plan to use the funds raised for critical expenses.  WDBJ7
  • The Roanoke Mast General Store will host its 5-year anniversary celebration on Saturday with candy sampling, free popcorn bags, gift card giveaways — and an in-store adoption event that offers a festive day for local shoppers. CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 19th, the Roanoke Pinball Museum celebrated its 10-year anniversary by marking a decade of local gaming and vintage exhibits—officials said special events are planned for later this year. Local visitors have shown strong support for the museum's anniversary celebration.  WDBJ7
  • Historic Smithfield in Blacksburg marked Juneteenth on June 19 by reading aloud the names of 226 enslaved people—community members and NAACP representatives attended the solemn ceremony beside the famed Merry Tree. The event reminded the group and visitors of the plantation’s deep past and the lives it affected.  WVTF

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The USDA announced $1 billion in drought relief for Virginia cattle farmers who suffered grazing losses in 2023 and 2024. Payments will be issued automatically through the Emergency Livestock Relief Program — producers with an approved LFP application will receive 35% of the payment and a second round may follow later this summer — to help ease financial strain.  The Roanoke Star
  • Officials in Troutville met with community members on June 12 at the Rainbow Lake Community Center to consider plans to revitalize the dam at Rainbow Forest Lake, built in 1965 and out of compliance since 2008 (past heavy rains and a 2011 lake drain raised concerns).  WSLS 10

  • Twin Valleys Roller Derby will host its first season home game Saturday at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the Twin Valleys All-Stars facing Virginia Vipers at 7:00 p.m. (admission is $13 for adults and free for kids 8 and under).  WSLS 10
