COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Botetourt County is hosting BOCO Wild today at Buchanan Town Park from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The third annual event features skateboarding, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, rock climbing, archery and food trucks—designed to attract about 1,000 visitors from Buchanan, Fincastle and Roanoke.  WSLS 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Roanoke business owner Sherry Frantz received a call claiming to be from AEP that threatened to shut off her power in 20 minutes for a $999.88 past-due bill—even though her account was up to date—and she later confirmed the call was fraudulent while warning others to use only the number listed on their bills.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke Police are searching for missing 17-year-old Natalie Routt, last seen June 11 at 10:45 p.m. near 9th Street SE in a white crop top and black shorts—she has red hair, brown eyes, a Saturn tattoo on her right wrist, a nose piercing and a medical condition requiring medication; anyone with information should call Roanoke Police at 540 853 2212.  WDBJ7

CULTURE NEWS

  • NokeFest, a new 3-day music and arts festival, debuted at Garrett Farms in Salem on June 13 and will run until June 15. The event features 26 national and regional headliners, local food vendors, art installations — and camping and glamping options for a family-friendly experience.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local teenager Katie Sempek is learning medical skills at Camp Carilion at Roanoke Memorial Hospital this summer—she practiced IV placement, suturing, and CPR with other rising high school students to prepare for future roles in healthcare.  WSLS 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, Gov. Youngkin signed a bill that makes it a crime to cause an overdose death by knowingly manufacturing, selling or distributing fentanyl. The law creates an offense of involuntary manslaughter and is part of his plan to hold drug dealers accountable—efforts that coincide with a 44 percent drop in fentanyl-related deaths year-over-year.  WSLS 10
  • Roanoke County administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19 for Juneteenth — other county services including public libraries and the clerk of circuit court will also have modified hours.  Roanoke County
  • A new webpage will display links to results for select races in the Virginia Primary Election on June 17. Polls open at 6 a.m.—and results will update after polls close at 7 p.m. as the election progresses.  WSLS 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Roanoke added Cynthia Haley, a Peer Recovery Specialist with Bradley Free Clinic, to its Responders for Recovery Program to help overdose victims and connect them with care. The program, launched over a year ago, has already reached more than 200 people and sent over 70 into treatment — a strong local effort to save lives.  WDBJ7
