COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Last Saturday, June 7, community members gathered at Melrose Plaza for the Spring FunDay to enjoy free food, face-painting, live music, and job opportunities — organized by the Kiwanis Club and Shiloh Baptist Church Men’s Ministry — with support from local partners like the library and Envision Center. The Roanoke Tribune
- ➤ Melrose Plaza, a new neighborhood center led by Goodwill Industries, will open on July 31 with a grand ribbon cutting and exhibits celebrating local Black history—key services like an adult high school, health center, and market will launch as part of the initiative—while local and statewide leaders attend the event. - ➤ City leaders and fire officials dedicated the Rawleigh Quarles Community Room at Roanoke Fire Station 5 on May 29, 2025—honoring the city’s first Black fire chief who joined in 1962 and went on to break barriers. The room, open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., is now available for community meetings and outreach through the fire administrator’s office. The Roanoke Tribune
- ➤ The Colonel William Preston Chapter of the NSDAR donated over 700 dollars to the Roanoke City Library Foundation to purchase books such as 'Black Heroes of the American Revolution' by Burke Davis for the Star City Reads program and America's 250th birthday celebration. The chapter also organized an exhibit at the O. Winston Link History Museum to highlight lesser known heroes who helped fight for freedom. The Roanoke Tribune

- ➤ On May 29, Roanoke honored its first Black fire chief, Rawleigh Quarles Sr., when a community room was dedicated at the Fire Station on Orange Ave. City officials (including Mayor Joe Cobb and Fire Chief David Hoback) said they admired his strong service and the leadership that opened doors for minority firefighters. - ➤ Local native LaRue V. Dickerson was sworn in as Roanoke Postmaster during an installation ceremony on May 30 at Cave Spring Post Office—he leads retail and delivery operations for Roanoke while local officials praised his long service and commitment to the community. The Roanoke Tribune
- ➤ Roanoke City Sheriff's Office is giving free gun locks and safety materials this month to help keep homes safe as part of Gun Violence Awareness Month — the office also asked residents to wear orange from June 6 to June 8 for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. WSLS 10
- ➤ The City of Roanoke launched the Focused Driving, Safe Arriving campaign to counter a rise in distracted driving crashes and encourage drivers to keep their focus on the road. The campaign has been active since June 2 and will run until July 13, inviting residents, business owners and artists to join the effort + spread its safety message. The Roanoke Tribune
- ➤ Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office will start its Summer Transparency Tour on Tuesday, June 10 at 6 p.m. at the Raleigh Court Library to let residents learn about operations, new laws, and corrections services — the first session will cover topics such as visitation, phone, commissary, and mail support.
