  • Roanoke law enforcement agencies are preparing to run 7.5 miles today for the Torch Run—an event that raises funds for Special Olympics Virginia at 8:45 a.m.; the run starts at Roanoke Salem Plaza and ends at Famous Anthony’s while building community ties.  WSLS 10

  • Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash on Roanoke Cove Road that occurred yesterday—officials say further details about the incident are pending.  WDBJ7

CRIME NEWS

  • Special agents arrested 27-year-old Jayshawn Lamonte Lomax on May 30 at a Roanoke address on Broadway Ave—seizing about 1,886 g of fentanyl, 1,275 g of methamphetamine, 425 g of marijuana, two firearms and $16,665 as part of an investigation that began in Bedford County.  WDBJ7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The RCPS+ summer program was cancelled after its funding was not renewed, leaving many families to search for alternative camps and lessons. The school district still offers free summer opportunities in athletics, arts and career readiness while Roanoke County camps and local organizations continue enrolling students.  WSLS 10
  • A team of 10 students from North Cross School known as the Robotic Raiders won the World KidWind Challenge Middle School Solar Championship on May 22 in Phoenix, AZ—beating 130 teams from the U.S., Asia, and Mexico. They upgraded the school’s chicken coop with solar panels, batteries, and other enhancements to boost egg laying and improve classroom access.  The Roanoke Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Tech researchers have developed a recyclable self-healing circuit board using a dynamic vitrimer polymer—combined with liquid metal droplets for electrical conduction—to create circuits that repair themselves when damaged. The innovation may reduce e-waste by simplifying recycling processes.  The Roanoke Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Roanoke is asking residents to fill out a survey to help improve 911 services — the survey will be available online, on social media, and by phone from June 9 through June 23.  WDBJ7
  • Roanoke County saved money on garbage truck maintenance after a project with Virginia Tech engineering students used sensor technology—reducing downtime by 30%, towing incidents by 27%, and repair costs by over 9%. The county plans to reinvest the savings into new trucks and equipment.  WSLS 10
  • Governor Youngkin signed SB 1279 Tuesday, June 3, which requires hospitals, birthing centers, and emergency departments to use safety bundles for spotting obstetric emergencies in both inpatient and outpatient care. The new law is part of his Healthy Moms, Healthy Families, Healthy Communities initiative—aimed at cutting maternal deaths by 50 percent over the past three years.  WDBJ7
