- ➤ Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb declared May 30 Jean Jadhon Day when she finished her last shift at WDBJ7 and received the Key to the City. Jean won awards for reporting on big local events and retired after many years in journalism — marking a major career change. WDBJ7
- ➤ Good Samaritan Hospice held its first Memorial Service and Butterfly Release on Saturday with Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb and local volunteers attending to honor loved ones. The event was sponsored by VFW Post 1264, Blackmore CPA and several local funeral homes—giving the community a new way to remember those they have lost. WSLS 10
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday evening, emergency crews responded to a crash at Richmond Highway and Doss Road that flipped a car and left two people seriously hurt — one was airlifted by a medical helicopter — while Highway 460 was closed for several hours during the investigation. ABC 13
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Between May 19—May 23, Roanoke police and several law enforcement agencies conducted Operation Summer Shield, which resulted in 27 arrests and the seizure of two firearms and nine ounces of narcotics to combat violent crime. ABC 13
- ➤ Roanoke Police arrested Reynaldo Hinojosa Mayan on DUI manslaughter charges after his red Jeep Wrangler collided head-on with a Chevrolet at the intersection of Cove Road and Dansbury Dr NW on Friday, May 30 at 11:39 p.m.—resulting in the death of 19-year-old Amarani Amaya Gomez at the scene, the later death of 18-year-old Mariangela Duenas at a hospital, and leaving a 17-year-old critically injured, with his breath sample showing a BAC twice the legal limit. - ➤ Yesterday, high school students held a panel at the TAP—No CAP Zone Teen Summit where they questioned city leaders including Mayor Joe Cobb and Sheriff Antonio Hash about safety and education while insisting their voices be heard. City officials praised the students for their direct questions and said they would work to address the concerns raised. WDBJ7
