ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Radford woman was severely injured in a motorcycle crash in Christiansburg nine months ago and is sharing her survival story during National Trauma Awareness Month after receiving swift care at LewisGale Medical Center—now in its second year as a Level 2 trauma center.  WSLS 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lebanese Festival is underway today at St. Elias Maronite Catholic Church in Roanoke — families enjoy folk dance and homemade food such as falafel wraps and kabobs. Volunteers prepared treats like spinach and feta wraps and meat pies while proceeds will help support church services and local groups.  WSLS 10
  • Famed comedian Jerry Seinfeld will perform at the Berglund Center in Roanoke on September 20 at 8 p.m.—tickets for the event go on sale starting June 6 at 10 a.m.  WSLS 10

  • Botetourt County Public Schools is investigating a cybersecurity incident that compromised its network earlier this month — officials quickly implemented security measures and engaged cybersecurity experts. They are working with local, state, and federal authorities to review the accessed data and will notify anyone affected if personal information is found.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roanoke’s financial report for the 2023-2024 fiscal year showed the city overspent $5,072,260 from its final budget, with fire operations and children’s services over budget by more than $7 million—council members are tightening oversight by cutting nearly $4 million from the current budget and planning stricter monthly reports.  WFXR-TV
  • Governor Youngkin said during a Friday news conference that now is the time to prepare for an above-average hurricane season that will begin on June 1 and run through November 30. Local, state and federal officials urge residents to assemble emergency kits with a three-day supply of water, food — first aid supplies, flashlights and batteries.  WVTF
  • Roanoke families will receive up to $365 in cooling assistance from the Cooling Assistance Program as city funding drops from last year’s $600 due to rising electric bills and more residents applying—applications open June 15.  WSLS 10
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin ordered that all U.S. and state flags on local and state buildings be flown at half-staff today in memory of the 12 victims of the 2019 Virginia Beach Municipal Center shooting + the flags will be lowered at sunrise and remain at half-staff until sunset.  WSLS 10
