- ➤ Today, city leaders and fire officials dedicated the Rawleigh Quarles Community Room at Roanoke Fire Station 5 to honor the city’s first Black fire chief—Rawleigh Quarles. Fire Chief David Hoback said the new space will be used for meetings and outreach. WSLS 10
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On May 29, Roanoke Police responded to a single-motorcycle crash on the 1500 block of Golfside Avenue NW where a man suffered serious injuries—he was taken to a local hospital and the incident remains under investigation. WFXR-TV
- ➤ On May 28, 45-year-old Derrick Wayne Turner of Roanoke rode his Suzuki GSRX 600 at high speed and crashed on the 1500 block of Golfside Avenue NW after veering off the road and hitting a tree—he later died in the hospital. WDBJ7
- ➤ Roanoke police say 45-year-old Derrick Wayne Turner died today from injuries he suffered after his motorcycle, traveling at high speed, left the road on Wednesday just before 8:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Golfside Avenue NW— investigators are still reviewing the cause. ABC 13
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Radford Army Ammunition Plant postponed the incinerator’s operation originally set for July and now plans to complete the new facility by next June due to heavy rains and design changes—this project will replace open burning with a safer alternative for processing energetic waste. WVTF
- ➤ The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center welcomed its first bobcat kitten of 2025 when it arrived on May 21 from Floyd County after its mother was killed in a car accident. The 4- to 5-week-old kitten now weighs 700 grams and is fed every three hours by intern Katherine McGrath—who takes careful steps to keep it wild—and the center will prepare it for release in 2026.
