COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Francis House in Roanoke faces a severe food shortage as monthly USDA deliveries drop by 61% and empty shelves force them to turn clients away; new supplies are expected next week, but community members are asked to donate shelf-stable items (peanut butter, canned meat, fruit) to help fill gaps.  WSLS 10
  • Residents on Nelms Road NE worry that an unfinished connector road will change their quiet cul-de-sac and impact safety and traffic patterns. The developer said the road—mandated for emergency access—has faced delays from high paving demand and reengineered site mapping, with paving set to begin soon.  WSLS 10
  • Bristol’s 25th anniversary Rhythm and Roots Reunion runs Sept. 11-13 on State Street with Sierra Ferrell and Old Crow Medicine Show. Meanwhile, Friends of Southwest Virginia launches a development plan with Washington County Sheriff’s Office hosting a St. Jude Benefit Ride on June 6 (rain date June 13).  Cardinal News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Roanoke Valley Preservation Foundation released its 2026 Endangered Sites list naming an 1850 Salem house, a closed Ole Monterey golf course with historic burials, and a 1873 stone bridge built for a defunct rail line. The list aims to raise awareness—prompting local efforts to preserve these landmarks.  WFIR News

  • Layla Barrett (an eighth grader from Chatham Middle School) returned from the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition after competing for the second straight year.  ABC 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Abigail Spanberger removed John Rocovich from Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors on Wednesday after citing ethics violations, and his name was immediately removed from the board listings.  WVTF
  • Storms yesterday damaged parts of Botetourt County, and first responders quickly mobilized to assist residents and assess the damage (further recovery plans are underway).  WDBJ7
  • A Montgomery County judge denied requests by families to halt Virginia Tech's plan to move the University Columbarium at a lengthy Thursday hearing — the judge said the plaintiffs had shown insufficient legal merit for an injunction.  WSLS 10

  • Roanoke County is reviewing proposals to allow denser cottage and townhouse clusters and convert underused commercial centers to mixed-use developments. The study by RKG Associates will guide a review by the planning commission and board of supervisors (changes may ease accessibility and lower costs).  WVTF
